The XZ format is a compression format for a single file and does not offer archiving functions, it is based on the LZMA2 algorithm, which is a high ratio algorithm, and offers lossless compression, which preserves the original data without any loss of quality , which is ideal for distributing things like software applications.

The XZ format file has high compression ratios and consequently has an effect on a significantly reduced file size of the generated file being 30% smaller than GZIP and approximately 15% smaller than BZIP2 files.

Compared to GZ files, XZ files have a better compression ratio and lower decompression time. However, when you use the default compression settings, it requires more memory to decompress and is somewhat less widespread.

XZ compression is slower than other methods, but decompression is relatively fast.

The XZ format is commonly used to distribute Slackware Linux package distributions.
