Open WOR File
The WOR file extension is primarily associated with MapInfo Professional, a software used for geographic mapping, which was developed by Pitney Bowes Software. WOR files are workspace files, which store the display settings and references to the Table (TAB, DAT, MIF) files that are used in a mapping project. MapInfo Professional is able to save the current desktop as a workspace file (WOR), containing all loaded tables, created maps, Layout Windows, graphs, Legends, and MapBasic programs.
Opening and Using WOR files with MapInfo Professional
This software, MapInfo Professional, is the primary application used to open WOR files. To open a WOR file in MapInfo, go to File > Open and select the WOR file you wish to open. If the software has been previously associated with the WOR filetype, you can also double-click the file to open it directly.
Besides MapInfo, there are several other GIS software which supports WOR file, such as QGIS and Global Mapper. The method to open WOR files with these software is similar to the method described above.
Conversion of WOR Files
WOR files can also be converted to other formats for easier sharing and editing. One can use a converter, like FME Desktop by Safe Software, to convert WOR files to DWG or SHP formats which are commonly used in other GIS software. To do this, simply load the WOR file into FME Desktop, specify the output format, and run the conversion.
WOR File Important Information
It's important to note that WOR files don't contain the actual spatial data, but rather the settings and references to where the data files are located. Therefore, if you're sharing a WOR file, you should also include the related data files. It's also important to be aware that opening a WOR file in different geographic information systems might yield different results. This is due to how various software interpret the layers and symbology referenced in the WOR file.
