Open WEBP File

The Webp file is a graphic format in the form of a container that emerged in 2010 from Google and that supports both lossy and lossless compression. A format was derived from the VP8 video standard developed by On2 Technologies and acquired by Google that same year.

It is a file format created by Google to reduce the size of images and thus reduce loading time. Decreasing size of images has become a necessity because today, most of the time we surf the Internet, we do it from the mobile device with limited download speed.

In this way, there is a saving in bandwidth and, therefore, a faster loading of the images of those websites that use this image format.

As technical data, the images in this compression format are 30% smaller than the same image in other common formats such as JPG, JPEG or PNG with the same image quality and based on their own compression methods. While files in JPG format are based on a lossy compression method, PNG files do the same, but without loss, and then there is the possibility that the WEBP format supports both possibilities.

For lossy compression the VP8 keyframe encoding is used and for lossless compression different techniques are used that transform the parameters and the image data, mainly the LZ77 algorithm, among others.

It is important to note that the WEBP format allows the inclusion of EXIF ??and XMP metadata, which are what today's cameras normally create and which store various information about each captured image.

Below is a brief list of the programs that are capable of working with WEBP files
