REF files have several applications. Some of them are described below:

IDRISI Raster Image Reference File

In this case, the REF files are files created by IDRISI Taiga (Today known as TerrSet), an integrated geographic information system (GIS) and remote sensing software that analyzes and displays geospatial information.

REF files are used to store georeference information so that RST images can be projected according to specific unit measurements.

Microsoft Train Simulator Reference File

In this application, REF is a file used by Microsoft Train Simulator, a program used to simulate trains and play the role of a locomotive engineer or passenger.

As in the previous application, and as its acronym may indicate, REF files contain a REFerence to the configuration of the shape file, including the shape file name, shadow properties, class, alignment, and description.

In other words, REF files store a list of shapes that can be imported into a simulation.
