Files of extension PIT can find several applications, here are some of them:
PackIt
In the past, the PIT file was one of the original, native Macintosh file compression formats.
Macintosh is a family of personal computers designed, manufactured and sold by Apple Inc. since 1984.
Today, PIT files have become obsolete and have been replaced by more advanced compression algorithms, such as ZIP and SIT compression.
Samsung Phone
In this application, the PIT file is used as firmware for some Android-based Samsung mobile phones, including Samsung Galaxy series phones.
Samsung manufactures Android-based mobile phones since 2009, its best known brand is Samsung Galaxy, which is a series of low, medium and high-end mobile devices.
This being the case, the PIT file is part of the firmware that is flashed on the device from the manufacturer, and is sometimes used by homebrew users, but it is not intended to be edited manually.
PIT files contain the Partition Information Table for the phone, hence the acronym for the extension.
Different firmware versions may use different partition layouts, but the specific settings on each phone are handled by the manufacturer and not accessible to the common user.
