Open INSTALL File

INSTALLER files are not a type of extension by themselves.

Instead, they are a set of files encompassed in a single function:

  • Install and configure

This type of INSTALLER files are used by different operating systems, be it MAC, Windows or Linux, to install software packages, hardware drivers or modules in general.

In the most popular operating systems, there are basically two ways to install a program on the system: downloading an executable file that is a specific installation program, or downloading a file and installing it using the OS's own installation manager.

The latter are offered in many cases for "enterprise installations", but there does not seem to be much difference between these and the former.

Some of the formats associated with this function are:

  1. EXE
  2. MSI
  3. DMG
  4. DEB
  5. RPM

This type of file is created using various software packages, such as InstallShield, Flexera, InnoSetup, IExpress.

This type of INSTALLER file is usually opened by just double-clicking on it, so that the installation of the packaged software begins.
