Norton Ghost, coming from the acronym General Hardware-Oriented System Transfer, is a disk backup and cloning tool originally developed by Binary Research, however in 1998 it was acquired by Symantec.

A file with a GHO extension contains the complete backup of files and folders on your system's hard drive.

Files with a GHO extension are created by your system using Symantec's Norton Ghost program, currently discontinued, to aid in backing up an entire hard drive.

After the cessation in 2013, files with this extension are being created and used with the help of Symantec Ghost Solution Suite.
